After several months of reviewing restaurants outside the vicinity of Montgomery, Alabama, I was eager to try something new, so I decided to go to lunch at Michael’s Table. It’s located right off of Zelda Road in the Zelda Place shopping center. Since the executive chef is Michael Hochhalter from Vintage Year, I knew the food was going to be excellent!

The restaurant is a little hidden gem because it is situated on the back corner side of the first entrance into the shopping center, but you’ll know it when you see it because there is a small outdoor café seating area right before you walk in the door. The actual restaurant is quite quaint on the inside with great ambient lighting and a view of the kitchen so you know exactly what’s going on back there as your food is being prepared.

For lunch Michael’s Table menu only has about 15 items on it, but they are all unique enough that there should be something for even the most picky eater to choose from and enjoy. If you want a salad, they have five on the menu, all for only seven dollars. I tried the spinach salad with brandy balsamic poppy seed dressing and was very pleased with it. They also offer a garden salad called the “table salad,” a Caesar and two others.

If you want something a little more substantial, they also offer a “table pizza” for $9 which has spinach, red onion, olives, andouille sausage, feta and artichokes and comes with a choice of side salad; a falafel pita for $9; and a Thai Red Curry roasted chicken quesadilla for $9.

I wanted a sandwich, and on the menu they offer a Jagerschnitzel poor boy which is a sautéed breaded pork cutlet with sweet and sour cabbage and Dijon mustard for $10, but on the Friday I dined there, they offered a soft crab poor boy also for $10, so that’s what I decided to order. It came with a side salad of my choice and I tried the spinach salad. The poor boy had a perfectly fried soft crab topped with a cole slaw on French bread. It was so good, it reminded me of the soft crab sandwiches I used to eat as a child back in Maryland.

Michael’s Table is also open for dinner but only from Wednesday through Saturday beginning at 6 pm. The dinner menu offers several of the same items from the lunch menu but also has entrees such as grilled tuna steak for $24, grilled tenderloin of beef for $26, and a Tuscan style Hunter’s Chicken for $22. For you wine lovers, they have a great selection of wine and they host a wine-tasting dinner from time to time.

If you’re looking for a great brunch spot after church or the bar on Sunday morning, Michael’s Table serves brunch from 11 am to 2 pm. I highly recommend trying the omelet of the day.
