| Joseph O. Patton is the editor-in-chief and publisher of the Capital City Free Press. He also designs and maintains the magazine's web site. Patton specializes in political commentary ("Off the record..."), but writes for all the sections of the Free Press. He founded the magazine in July of 2001 and published the first edition the following month.
Patton is a December 2001 graduate of Auburn University Montgomery in Montgomery, Alabama. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science with a minor in Mass Communication and is a former reporter for the Montgomery Independent and former news editor for the Coosa County News. While at AUM, Patton worked as the editor-in-chief of the Aumnibus, the student newspaper, from 1998 to 2000 and also served as the editorial page editor, layout-design editor, and political commentator while at the publication. During his time at AUM, Patton founded and served as president of AUM College Democrats and co-founded and served as president of the Alabama Federation of College Democrats. Patton was involved in STARS (Student Teams Advocating Realistic Solutions), the student wing of the Higher Education Partnership of Alabama; served as general director of the independent, student-led group P.A.V.E. (People Against Vetoing Education) in 1997 that opposed higher education funding cuts proposed by then-Governor Fob James; served as the publicity chairperson for the Campus Activities Board; and was named "Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities" in 2000. Patton currently resides in Montgomery, Alabama and is working on a novel tentatively titled "Twitch" as well as a compilation of articles and inside stories from the Capital City Free Press. He is also a recent recipient of the Montgomery Advertiser's Silver Pen Award. November 7, 2006 brought Patton's first foray into radio as a commentator as part of WAUD 1230 in Auburn's election night coverage. He began offering his own segment on the station a week later. Patton's "Goat Hill Gossip," a highly satirical and humorous look at Alabama politics, ran from November of 2006 through July of 2007 on WAUD as part of Lane Powell's "Inside Auburn."
